Holes book review
“Holes” by Louis Sachar is about a young boy named Stanley Yelnats, who gets arrested for something he didn’t do. The judge that took care of the case gave Stanley two choices. He could either go to jail or he could go to place called Camp Green Lake in Texas. Stanley came from a very poor family and he’s never been to camp before, so he wanted to try it out. But when he arrived at Camp Green Lake, there was no lake! It had already dried up with the town that was there before. Also, when Stanley got there, he was renamed as Caveman. All the boys there were renamed. There was Squid, X-Ray, Magnet, Armpit, Zigzag, and Zero. And once they were renamed, they were renamed for good. Their punishment there was to dig a hole each day, five feet deep and five feet wide. They have to dig holes for a several reasons. One of those reasons was they can ‘build character’ that way, and they also have to dig holes because the owner of Camp Green Lake warden, as looking for something valuable from the past. One day when the boys were digging, a big commotion appeared. One of the boys there started to hit Stanley and bully him. All of a sudden, Zero began to choke that boy and the fight ended with zero hitting one of the counselors there on the face with a heavy, strong medal shovel after being called stupid and running away. After a few days past and zero still didn’t come back, Stanley took off as well. It just so happens that there wasn’t any water for 100 miles. Stanly and zero remembered where the treasure may have been and they went back to camp at dark and began to dig. It all ended with Stanley and zero finding the treasure and going home together.
